At 77 Diamonds we are always looking at new and alternative uses of diamonds. Imagine our complete and utter joy at sourcing a new and alternative diamond that has yet to be discovered previously – a diamond that glows in the dark!
The “Green Star” diamond in darkness
The “Green Star” diamond in daylight
The 2.5-carat diamond round diamond was graded F Colour with a VVS2 clarity by gemmologists – a high quality but relatively common by diamond standards, however, the this was under normal daylight conditions. Under darkness, a noticeable green light appears to shine from within – something we have never seen before and has had the whole team very excited!
We know already that approximately 35% of all diamonds have fluorescence producing a blue glow under ultra-violet light, however we have never known a luminescence like this to occur on it’s own accord.
Working alongside Dr. M. Videnskabmand of the University of Copenhagen‘s Department of Geophysics, we have been just as amazed as him over the stone – now dubbed “The Green Star.”
The rarity of such a piece has left us speculating the value of something this unique that we know has never gone on general sale or auction. With the assistance of Dr Videnskabmand we would value the diamond at approximately £1.25 million given that rare diamonds of this size have gone for similar amounts at auction – but we can only speculate at this time as we do not know how the global market will react to such a find.
We feel it would be best to leave the diamond loose and not set it into a piece of our jewellery until further information is released when Dr Videnskabmand’s analyses are complete.
Update: We regret to inform you all that unfortunately we have not found a glow in the dark diamond. April Fools!
