When Seventy Seven Diamonds heard there was a diamond auction taking place in London this week, our eyes and ears were scouring for extra details. We soon learned the an extremely rare blue diamond set in a ring by Bulgari was up for auction at Bonham’s.
With a guide price of approximately £1.5 million the platinum ring that was set with a 5.04ct fancy deep blue was sold for a record price of £1.18 million PER CARAT! A total price of £6,201,250 this set a record price for fancy blue coloured diamonds.
Lasting only 10 minutes, with calls coming in from across the globe the diamond was snapped up by jewellers Graff Diamonds. The director of Bonham’s’ European jewellery department, Jean Ghika, said after the auction that “Blue diamonds, especially those over 5.00 carats, are extremely rare to see on the market and continue to be highly sought-after. We are honoured to have handled the sale of such a unique gem.”
Fancy coloured diamonds are much rarer than white diamonds with fancy deep blue accounting for less than 1% of the total diamond population. We’re glad to see such a rare and beautiful diamond in our city.
